I visited the Wollaton this time last year, when they were offering a fantastic deal of 50% off selected dishes across all courses. I decided to take advantage of this deal again to see in the new year with a whole new menu to look forward to!

A table for two.......

To Start

'Smoked Haddock, leek and pumpkin tart with chunky tartare sauce and salad'

Very generously sized piece of tart, almost the size you would expect for a main course. Thumbs up from my dining partner James. Light crumbly pastry with cheese baked into it as a nice touch. I sampled the tartare sauce and it was well seasoned and had a nice crunch of gherkin.

'Grilled field mushrooms on toast with garlic and herb butter'

Again, a very generously sized starter. A lovely crucnhy piece of ciabatta with soft rich meaty mushrooms and a light garlic sauce which wasn't too overpowering.

To Follow

'Grilled Salmon Escalope with butterbean, leek and chorizo stew'

The main meals arrived quite speedily after the first courses, not even 10 minutes i would say. Although the service was very fast and efficient, i would have liked a little more time in between these courses, as it began to feel a little rushed.

We both went for the salmon, i think the chorizo stew 'sealed the dea'l as we are both big fans! The salmon was lightly panfried so that it was soft but had a nice crisp crust to it. The chorizo stew was perhaps a little under seasoned, and was not as rich in flavour as i would expect as  there wasn't enough of that paprika and tomato flavour that i enjoy from a dish such as this. Also, some of the vegetables were a little undercooked, but on the whole the dish was enjoyable.

To Finish

'Sticky Toffee pudding with toffee sauce and malty ice cream'

A bit of a favourite of mine, and a regular on most menus. On first arrival my pudding was a little cold so i sent it back, which was dealt with by the staff with no problems. When my new dessert arrived it was everything i expected, soft and gooey with a bit of chew to it, and loads of rich sticky toffee sauce. The ice cream was also very impressive, and the bits of crunchy malteser were a real treat.

'Warm chocolate and hazlenut brownie with vanilla ice cream'

I couldn't help sampling this great looking desert, so much so that we both dived in before taking a picture (hence the rather artistic streak in the chocolate sauce). The brownie was just warm enough that you could smell the cocoa as it arrived at the table and it was served with a luscious dark chocolate sauce. Again, a very decent amount of sauce with this pudding which was great. There were nice big chunks of nut in the brownie and it had great sticky texture but still a little bit crumbly on top.  The ice cream was a  really good accompaniment to the sauce and meant it didn't become too rich.

Total price with 50% discount £28 (does not include service)
